ROUTE 66.. America on the road
(A spreadsheet game)
Focus Areas: System Design, Game Design, Development
On the busy Route 66, you own a small diner and wish to make it in the big leagues. How quickly can you earn your way till your diner is at full capacity?
You start with 3 Tables and 2 Waiters. The road to the big leagues is a long one, the challenge is can you make it?
In this project, the main idea I chose to focus was the System Design. The idea of players serving the tables, earning money, paying expenses, and upgrading was the core. I wanted the grind to get easier, and had planned to work on with an industry-tested technique of PRESTIGE. The challenge was that the sink of resources increased as the game progressed, while being fair (and believable) for the players. The necessity to PRESTIGE becomes apparent at later stages, which benefits players with Investors, that in turn provide faster earnings. This intricate dance of systems was conceptualized and achieved by me to understand and explore this territory.
The idea of having System Based game design, is that Systems evoke emotions. Interacting with systems, feels more natural and players tend to put stories to their experience. As systems are not usually rigid, the loose connection along with consistency provides a feeling of liveliness of the system.
